Unhindered independent fun is what the SUB 14 is all about.
This little vessel is surprisingly capable and stable. She can be moved around on her trailer, launched and retrieved with the greatest of ease by a single person. The hull has been well designed and is very efficient through the water. This leads onto a low Hp requirement and therfore a fuel-efficient vessel. Being pushed along by a diminutive 15hp motor she supplies a lively ride and is certainly no slouch through the water. On this note, by being under 14ft and being capable of being pushed by a 9.9hp motor, with the appropriate high torque propellor, she may be allowed to operate in certain jurisdictions which only allow motors below 10Hp. (Further to this, in certain geographic areas you may not be required to be in a possession of a skippers ticket or seaworthy certificate.) By avoiding all the paraphernalia associated to a remotely operated motor and instead using the tiller as the means of control she has very little in the way of unnecessary equipment on board and thus very little maintenance is required. From a safety perspective, below decks she is filled with closed cell foam which will supply positive bouncy in the case of an emergency. Further to this she has a “wet deck” that is self-draining thus no need for bilge pumps. The cockpit and foredeck are uncluttered and thus supply a wonderful platform for flyfishing, spinning or throwing a cast net. There is a surprising amount of dry storage aboard and would be more than enough for most of us to enjoy a day on the water.
All in all, if owning a vessel with the following attributes is important to you then she may be just what you have been waiting for. 1) The ability to get into the back waters and narrow channels and stream; 2) Very shallow draft; 3) Light weight; 4) Extremely light on fuel; 5) Very low maintenance costs; 6) Small foot print in your yard or garage; 7) The ability to go solo; 8) Small but safe & seaworthy.
